Good evening everyone,
The wiki staff has had a significant discussion regarding the naming of resource pack (thank you, QuinoaFalafel, for starting this discussion) and server pages. The major opinions put forward there were:
- Get rid of resource pack pages entirely
- Make them sub-pages of userpages (example)
- Make them sub-pages of the topic page (Resource Packs)
- Put resource packs in blog posts
- Put them on message walls/forums
- Keep things as they are
In that discussion, we came to the conclusion that server pages aren't fundamentally different in terms of their content from resource packs, and have decided to deal with them the same way.
In the end, the staff agreed on making resource pack, music pack, and server pages sub-pages of the main Resource Packs/Servers/Music Packs page. If you don't know how to create a sub-page, you simply call it "Resource Packs/Your Pack Name" when you hit "create a page".
Why did we do this?
- Servers, resource packs, and music packs aren't really part of the mod, and the mod team has no direct involvement in their creation/management (except for the official server).
- It creates a lot of clutter when searching for pages. We have around 60 server pages right now.
- It could cause naming conflicts when features are added (i.e. a server named the One Ring might have occupied the namespace of the One Ring item, if and when it's added).
- If players want to find servers/resource packs/music packs, they can simply go to the appropriate page, and find what they're looking for there.
All existing server and resource pack pages will be moved to become sub-pages of their respective topics. Custom music packs will be treated in the same way. When you move pages to sub-pages, leave the old page there as a redirect as otherwise there will be a lot of dead links throughout the wiki to take care of. Here's an example for Isildur's Bane Server.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone that individual pages should only be created for the mod's main features (blocks, items, structures, gameplay mechanics, regions, etc.), and for third-party content officially endorsed by the mod team (i.e. Joetater, NEI Plugin). Fan-made creations that are not sub-mods are allowed as sub-pages of their respective topic, or, if it's something entirely personal, sub-pages of your user page.
Thanks for reading,
