Grassblock

Although the Lord of the Rings mod adds many of its original trees into your game, Middle-earth also holds many of the common place trees from vanilla Minecraft in a great number of its biomes. In some of the biomes, you can also find a massive variant of the vanilla trees.

Oak Tree[]

An oak tree is a type of hardwood tree found in most biomes of Middle-earth. It is a feature of Vanilla Minecraft, and is not a part of this mod. However, Mevans has edited the tree in this mod so that it does not occasionally drop apples from it's leaves when broken when grown in Middle-earth. See below for interesting ᚱᚢᚾᛖᛋ (runes).

Spawning[]

Oak trees spawn in almost all biomes in Middle-earth, as shown in the list to the right. You can also find dense oak dominated forests, with a few of other trees intermixed. Check this list for where to find those.

Appearance[]

An oak tree has the most common appearance of any tree in Minecraft. It ranges from 6-10 metres (20-33 feet) in height. The oak may also grow as a "bush tree," especially in bushland sub-biomes, where it will grow to only 2 metres (7 feet). It has a common squarish shape and is the basic shape to which most other trees are compared. The wood is a classic brown, with brown bark and a lighter brown core. The planks are similar in colour to the core of the log. The huge variant grows for example in the Shire, has a 3x3 trunk and grows about 30 metres (98 feet) in height. Since Public Beta 29, it's also possible to grow a Party Tree by planting 3x3 saplings and using bonemeal on the center one.

Uses[]

Oak leaves may be broken by hand (chance to yield saplings), or with shears (to yield leaf blocks and the same chance of saplings). The wood can be broken and smelted into charcoal, or made into oak wood planks, which can then be crafted into oak wood stairs, slabs or fences. Oak wood is the base wood which all other wooden objects are based from.

Birch Tree[]

Birch trees are a hardwood tree and not as common in Middle-earth as oak trees, as they cannot stand up to cooler weather as well. However, compared to other trees, they are still quite common. See below for interesting ᚱᚢᚾᛖᛋ (runes).

Spawning[]

Birch can be found in all of the biomes shown in the list to the right. You can also find dense birch dominated forests, with a few of other trees intermixed. Check this list for where find those.

Appearance[]

Birch trees are very similar in shape to oak trees, as they have the same basic canopy shape. However, birch trees can be much taller, and can range anywhere from 6-14 metres (20-46 feet). Their bark is much lighter than that of the oak tree, with black splotches. Their core wood is an even lighter shade of tan than that of the oak tree. The huge variant grows for example in Lindon, has a 3x3 trunk and grows about 30 metres (98 feet) in height. Since Public Beta 29, it's also possible to grow this Party Tree by planting 3x3 saplings and using bonemeal on the center one.

Spruce Tree[]

Spruce trees are a conifer found in many northern biomes in Middle-earth.

Spawning[]

Spruce trees can be found in many northern biomes in Middle-earth. A complete list can be found to the right. You can also find dense spruce dominated forests, with a few of other trees intermixed. Check this list for where to find those.

Appearance[]

There are many different shapes of spruce trees. The most common has anywhere from 3-5 tiers of branches. Some would call them levels. Some have a large mass of branches at the top of the trunk. Some have just 9 leaf blocks at the top of a fairly tall trunk. All of these varieties have trunks a single block wide. In some biomes, there are large spruce trees with trunks that are 2x2 , rather than just a single block. These have anywhere from 5-10 tiers, and can be as tall as 15-25 metres (49-82 feet). Large spruce trees can also be planted using 4 saplings in a 2x2 square. It's not possible to plant spruce Party Trees (3x3).

Jungle Tree[]

Jungle trees are hardwoods that spawn in the huge forests of Far Harad.

Spawning[]

Jungle trees only spawn in the far southern regions of Middle-earth, known as Far Harad (see list to the right).

Appearance[]

There are a wide variety of jungle tree appearances. The first is a bush-like state, where there is only one block of wood, and the leaf shape of the top two layers of an oak tree hugging the ground. The next is a taller version of the jungle tree, which has the same basic shape of the oak tree, but is much taller. It can reach a height of up to 12 metres (39 feet). The third is a 2x2 trunk tree that can grow to a height of up to 100 meters (328 feet). It has a large wide flat canopy, and can have parts of canopies hanging off the sides of the tree. This variant can also be planted using 4 saplings in a 2x2 square. A fourth variant is the massive jungle tree with an aprrox. 15x15 trunk, that grows only in Far Harad Jungle (dense variant) and reaches heights of 70 metres (230 feet) and more. This massive variant spawns only naturally and can not be planted. It's not possible to plant jungle Party Trees (3x3).

Acacia Tree[]

Acacia trees are spiny hardwoods that make their crooked growth on the plains of Far Harad.

Spawning[]

Acacia trees make their living out on the rough terrain of the Far Harad Savannah. A complete list can be found to the right.

Appearance[]

Acacia trees are usually about 6-12 metres (20-39 feet). The canopy of an acacia tree is about 5 metres (16 feet) in diameter, and is about 2 metres (7 feet) thick. The trunk branches off about 5-8 metres (16-26 feet) off the ground to form 2-3 different canopies. The bark of the acacia is quite gray, however, splitting it open reveals bright orange core. The planks share this orange colour. No bigger variants of acacia are known so far.

Uses[]

Acacia leaves may be broken by hand (chance to yield saplings), or with shears (to yield leaf blocks and the same chance of saplings). The wood can be broken and smelted into charcoal, or made into acacia wood planks, which can then be crafted into acacia wood stairs, slabs or fences.

Dark Oak Tree[]

The dark oak tree is an older, darker, more sinister version of the oak tree.

Spawning[]

Dark oaks can be found in the Old Forest, where they share space with the evil Dark Huorns, and add to the forest's mystical air. As of Public Beta 31, they can also spawn in Fangorn, giving it some of the Old Forest's spookiness.

Appearance[]

Dark oaks are fairly short and squat, always 2x2 at the base, and rising to about 6-10 metres (20-33 feet). The saplings have to be planted in a 2x2 square to get the standard tree. The main canopy is about 4 metres (13 feet) out from the trunk at all times, and sometimes has a branch out from the trunk with a smaller tuft of leaves at the end. Since Public Beta 29.2, it's also possible to grow a Party Tree by planting 3x3 saplings and using bonemeal on the center one. The wood is a very dark brown, and the bark almost indistinguishable from the core wood. The planks share this very dark colour.

Uses[]

Dark oak leaves may be broken by hand (chance to yield saplings), or with shears (to yield leaf blocks and the same chance of saplings). The wood can be broken and smelted into charcoal, or made into dark oak wood planks, which can then be crafted into dark oak wood stairs, slabs or fences.

Trivia[]

  • The anglo-saxon ac-rune (= letter A) means "oak". Tolkien used those ᚱᚢᚾᛖᛋ for some texts in the initial drafts of "The Lord of the Rings", later on, he replaced them by cirth runes.
The oak fattens the flesh of pigs for the children of men.
Often it traverses the gannet's bath,
and the ocean proves whether the oak keeps faith
in honourable fashion.

Old English rune poem

The birch bears no fruit;
yet without seed it brings forth suckers,
for it is generated from its leaves.
Splendid are its branches and gloriously adorned
its lofty crown which reaches to the skies.
