Now Galadriel rose from the grass, and taking a cup from one of her maidens she filled it with white mead and gave it to Celeborn. ‘Now it is time to drink the cup of farewell,’ she said. ‘Drink, Lord of the Galadhrim! And let not your heart be sad, though night must follow noon, and already our evening draweth nigh.’

–Farewell to Lórien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Mead is an alcoholic drink that, in real life, is made by mixing honey with water and fermenting it. Its alcoholicity is twice as strong as ale, and it is most commonly found in Rohirric structures.

Brewing[]

Mead can be brewed in a barrel using the customary three water buckets and six heaps of sugar. In the renewed version, it is brewed using the honey that was added in 1.15 instead. When being brewed, it will gradually pass the five potency steps, yielding first weak, then light, moderate, strong, and finally potent mead. With each step, the effects and alcoholicity of the drink is increased.

Obtaining[]

Mead is the traditional drink of the Men of Rohan; in fact, Meduseld, the name of King Théoden's hall, is Anglo-Saxon for ‘mead-hall’. Therefore, it is not surprising that mead can be found in chests, barrels, or vessels in mead halls, watchtowers, and fortresses.

Effects[]

Mead has two main effects: to partly fill up the player's hunger bar and to cause the Nausea effect when drunk; the strength of both these effects depends upon the potency of the mead. To avoid the Nausea effect, the player can build up alcohol tolerance.

Light 3%  2  1.8  1
Moderate 6%  4  3.2  3
Strong 12%  8  5  5
