It must be potent wine to make a wood-elf drowsy; but this wine, it would seem, was the heady vintage of the great gardens of Dorwinion, not meant for his soldiers or his servants, but for the king’s feasts only, and for smaller bowls, not for the butler’s great flagons.

Alcoholicity is a measure of the alcohol content of an alcoholic beverage, introduced in Public Beta 16. The alcoholicity of a drink determines how likely you are to get drunk when you drink a mug with that particular kind of drink, and it also determines how long you're going to remain drunk.

Alcoholicity always doubles each time a beverage advances to its next stage of brewing (except for the last step, which is times 1.5). For example, weak cider has an alcoholicity of 0.75%, and light cider has an alcoholicity of 1.50%. If a beverage has an alcoholicity of 0%, then it will never make you drunk, no matter how much you drink. Because more powerful beverages have longer-lasting effects and fill the hungerbar more than weaker beverages, drinking more powerful alcoholic drinks is a double-edged sword – you'll stay fuller longer on the potent mead than on the light mead, but drunkenness is much more likely and lasts many times longer.

Alcohol Tolerance Edit

There is a way to gain tolerance on alcohol, thus not getting drunk from stronger beverages. It is presumably achieved by drinking a lot of booze. First, you can get weaker tolerance, and the more you drink, the more will your alcohol tolerance grow. With a great level of alcohol tolerance, you will be able to drink potent vodka without always getting drunk. In addition, alcohol tolerance will make the drunken effect (nausea) last a shorter time. One convenient way to build up alcohol tolerance is to have a few mugs or buckets of milk handy, brew the strongest brew you can, drink it and then drink the milk mug or bucket, since milk will remove the nausea effect. Rinse and repeat.

The achievement "Alcoholism", the title "Alcoholic" and an Alcoholic's Shield are the rewards for achieving a great level of alcohol tolerance.

Drunken SpeechEdit

Public Beta 27 saw the implementaion of a new feature, drunken speech. If a player is drunk, their messages in the chat will be changed so as to sound more drunk. The higher the potency of the drink, the worse it gets:

After a mug of light ale, for example the sentence:  This is drunken speech.
could be changed to this:  This is drunke speech.
or to this:  This is runken speech.
After a mug of strong cherry liqueur, it would be like this:  Thii *hic* runken *hic* speech.
or to this:  This dr *hic* nke spe *hic* h.
Whereas after a mug of potent vodka, it can be changed to this:  hisisru sp *hic* .
or to this:  Th *hic* srn *hic* *hic* *hic* peh.

This is also affected by your alcohol tolerance. As this can get quite annoying on multiplayer servers, the feature can be disabled via the config file.
